License renewals take place every two years. Paper renewal notices are no longer being sent out, so it is imperative that you have the correct e-mail address on record with the Department.

Your license must be renewed by October 31^st of the odd-numbered year following your initial licensure. The renewal period is open one month before the expiration date and requires a $25 fee. Your supervisor will have to complete a Continuing Education Sponsor Questionnaire before you can begin your CE hours and send it to:

Speech-language pathologist assistants must complete 10 hours of CE during the two years before license renewal. During the renewal period, the application will be available on the IDFPR website. You must participate in an approved program to be renewed. The approving agencies are:

• ASHA
• Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association
• Any affiliates of the aforementioned agencies
• Any accredited college or university, firm, state agency, person, or association approved by the Department

The sponsor allowing you to complete the CE hours is responsible for issuing a Certification of Attendance, so you can send it along with your application as proof the required hours have been completed. The certificate must contain the sponsor’s name, address, and license number. Your name and address must also be included with a short statement regarding the subject matter studied.

The hours each program was attended, as well as the date and location of the program, must be signed by the sponsor. You will be notified in writing if you aren’t meeting the CE requirements, and if the Board sees fit, you may face disciplinary action. But, if you meet one of the following criteria, you can have the CE requirement waived:

• Full-time member of the U.S. armed forces during a large part of the renewal period
• Suffer from an incapacitating illness
• Similar extenuating circumstances

It will take 3-5 days for your information to update in the system, so do not check it before that time frame is over.
