Every two years, speech-language pathologist (SLP) licenses must be renewed by October 31st of an odd-numbered year. The renewal period begins in September, and you will have to prove you’ve taken a minimum of 20 continuing education (CE) hours before your license is renewed. One of those CE hours has to be in ethics training.

Hours are gained through attending or participating in courses given by a Board-approved SLP program. Distance learning courses are also eligible for CE credit as long as they conclude with an examination.

The courses should be post-graduate training programs completely focused on speech-language pathology. Any classes taken at a college, university, or graduate school that are related to the speech-language pathology curriculum also count as CE credit. Each semester hour counts as 15 CE hours, and 10 CE hours is equal to one quarter-hour of semester credit.

Obtaining CE credit is fairly simple. It can be done by authoring papers, dissertations, and other publications, as well as preparing presentations. Presentations must be given to an audience of SLPs, or professionals in a similar field. You can earn a maximum of five credit hours using one of these methods.

Before completing your CE hours, your supervisor will fill out and send in the Continuing Education Sponsor Questionnaire to outline the plan for training. Once the plan is completed, the sponsor will provide you with a Certificate of Attendance to mail in with your renewal application. The application is only available during the renewal period.

The Certificate of Attendance must contain both your and the sponsor’s name and address. The sponsor has to also include their license number, if applicable, and a brief description of the subject matter covered for CE. The program’s location, the dates you attended, and hours spent receiving CE will also be filled out by the sponsor.

Renewal fees for temporary and permanent licenses are $50.
