Speech-Language Pathology Assistant License Renewal Process

The licensure renewal period runs from October 1st of an even-numbered year through September 30th of the next even-numbered year. That means licenses are renewed every two years. The renewal period is very strict and does not allow a grace period. So, if you haven’t renewed your license by October 1st of the biennium, you are not permitted to practice as an SLPA.

The renewal fee is $70 if the license renewal is issued on or before September 30th of the odd-numbered year. any licenses issued on or after October 1st of that year will pay a prorated fee of $35. The late fee is $50. Please allow the Department 4-6 weeks to process the renewal. You’ll have to submit an application and provide any additional information that may be required.

One of the requirements for license renewal is the completion of 15 continuing education hours every two years. Some of the accepted courses include:

  • Ethics of Accent Modification
  • Disability Inclusion
  • Treating Skill-based Feeding and Swallowing Disorders
  • Connecting Swallowing, Cognition, and Dignity

Other ways to earn continuing education credit hours are to attend state or regional conferences, formal in-service training, approved workshops, independent study programs, or any combination of these activities.

On the renewal application, you’re simply asked to check a box certifying that you’ve completed the 15 hours. You’re only required to produce certificates of completion if you are audited by the Department.
