Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) must complete at least 30 hours of continuing education (CE) in order to maintain licensure. These hours must be attained before the biennial renewal period is over. A minimum of two hours needs to be focused on ethics training.
In order for continuing education hours to be eligible for use, they must be gains in the field of speech-language pathology. Only four hours can be spent studying a field closely related to speech-language pathology. CE hours must be submitted by January 31st of the renewal period.
Educational activities you can engage in for CE hours include courses approved by ASHA or classes at an accredited postsecondary institution. Please note that these courses need to be in speech-language pathology, or you won’t be given CE credit and may risk having your license temporarily revoked.
Other courses or programs will need the Board’s approval before you can enroll. These include home study courses, in-service training from an organization or service provider, academic courses or programs for which you are the presenter, and professionally published articles you’ve authored.
While attaining your 30 CE hours, keep in mind that any online coursework can be up to 10 hours each day. Programs that are not accepted as CE hours are general education courses, elective courses, or courses needed to meet degree requirements. If the CE subjects are outside the speech-language pathology field, but the board believes the course will enhance your ability to practice, they may make an exception and allow up to four credit hours in that area of study.
Whether it’s a sponsor or program that is looking for approval, they must get authorization from the Board. Therefore, if a program you want to take needs to be approved, the sponsor must submit their application to the board 30 days before the program begins.
Up to 15% of licensees applying for renewal will have their CE hours randomly audited. If you are one of the chosen licensees, you’ll need to provide a transcript or tracking sheet given to you by a professional association. Other acceptable documents are an official certificate of completion or an affidavit. These forms should be signed by the program’s instructor when submitted.
