District of Columbia Speech-Language Pathologist License Renewal Procedure

Licensure renewals are completed online biennially at midnight on December 31st of even-numbered years. Renewal applicants have to undergo a fingerprint-based CBC and

acquire 20 hours of continuing education to remain in good standing. Otherwise, they risk disciplinary action. Of the required 20 hours, one hour must be in ethics, and two hours of LGBTQ CE is mandatory.

The remaining hours are to be spent in Board-approved programs contributing to your professional growth and competence. Activities arranged or sponsored by the following organizations are pre-approved by the Board:

  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
  • Speech-Language-Hearing Association of the District of Columbia or an equivalent out-of-state association
  • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
  • International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET)

Check with the Board before signing up for an activity if you are unsure of its approval status.

Activities you attend will include seminars, workshops, university or college courses, conferences, and in-service training. Presenting or speaking at conferences or training sessions, or publishing articles related to speech-language pathology is another way to earn CE.

Keep in mind that CE is supposed to expand on the knowledge you already have so you can provide the best services to patients. Therefore, if you’ve already received credit for a presentation, it will not be granted again. Credit also will not be granted for work done in your normal occupation or duties.

You’ll receive a certificate of completion for each activity. Hold on to these as you may be one of the licensees included in the annual CE audit. Each year the Board audits 10% of renewal applications to verify the proper CE hours were attained. If you’re unable to produce the proper documentation, you will be subject to disciplinary action.
