Colorado SLP License Renewal & Continuing Education

Once licensed, all Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in Colorado must renew their certification annually and meet continuing professional competency requirements as outlined by state law.

Per 4 CCR 748‑1.11 – Continuing Professional Competency, each licensee must complete one of the following options each renewal period:

  • Participate in Colorado’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program: Includes completing a Reflective Self‑Assessment Tool (RSAT), creating a learning plan, and completing 10 Professional Development Activities (PDAs).
  • Attain “Deemed Status” by completing an approved continuing competency program—currently, the Colorado Department of Education is the only entity recognized (ASHA activities do not qualify unless approved).
  • Military Exemption: Active-duty personnel can request an exemption for up to one renewal period under certain conditions.

According to multiple official summaries, Colorado SLPs are required to complete 10 hours of continuing education annually, and license renewal is due by November 30 each year ([MedBridge summary][turn0search4]; [speechpathologygraduateprograms.org][turn0search11]).

Best practices for renewal:

  • Begin early: Complete your RSAT and plan early in your renewal period so PDAs are intentional and relevant.
  • Track activities: Use spreadsheets or professional logs to record PDAs with dates, topics, providers, and credit hours.
  • Enter activity details into the DORA portal: When renewing your license online, you’ll attest to meeting competency and report your completed PDAs.
  • Keep backup documentation: Hold onto certificates and receipts in case DORA requests proof.

Renewing on time and completing your continuing competency obligations ensures your legal ability to practice. You can always renew via the official DORA Speech-Language Pathology Portal.
