Michigan Speech-Language Pathologist License Renewal Procedure

License renewals are processed every two years and completed online. Before their license expires, speech-language pathologists are expected to obtain 20 continuing professional development (CPD) credits, with one hour being in pain or symptom management. Here is a list of requirements for license renewal:

  • Renewal application fee of $162.20
  • Answer Good Moral Character questions and supply documentation for any questions answered with a “yes”
  • If you face any disciplinary action you will need to provide documentation
  • Show evidence of having completed human trafficking training
  • Complete one hour of implicit bias training
  • Accept Renewal Attestation to certify you have met all CPD requirements

Up to 15 hours of CPD can be completed through ASHA. A maximum of five CPD hours can be earned by reading articles in a scientific or professional journal about the practice of speech-language pathology.

Presenting SLP programs and writing articles regarding research or education in the field that is published in peer-reviewed, healthcare, professional, or scientific journals are other ways to gain the hours required for license renewal.

While you won’t be required to submit proof that you completed the continuing professional development credit hours each renewal cycle, you will have to keep all documents proving that you’ve completed the requirement for four years. If you are ever randomly selected for an audit the board will ask you to produce these documents confirming the attainment of CPD credit hours.

You’ll receive a renewal notification via e-mail 90 days before your license expires. Make sure your e-mail address on file with the board is updated.
